Combating rogue movers

Rogue Moving Companies pop up over night and as quickly as they are shut down, they are up and running, sometimes the very next day, under a different name. The actions of these companies have cost innocent consumers thousands of dollars and immeasurable heartache.

So what is a Rogue Mover? These are unscrupulous people who attract you with extremely low prices, usually offering 'free' upgrades (boxes, packing materials etc) and ask you for a cash deposit before they start to load your possessions. Once they have your goods 'locked' into their truck, additional costs are calculated (heavy items fees, star-carry fees, mileage fees etc) and will not move the truck until you pay more money. Other methods include driving to your new residence and demanding the cash before they start unloading. Cash is the only form of payment they will take which can force most people to drive to a cash machine while they hold your possessions hostage.

• The company's office and/or warehouse are non-existent or in poor condition

The most reputable moving companies proudly show their affiliations on their website and often provide references right there for you to view but it is the professionals who answer the phone that will build your confidence.
